Here, take my hand!

What a Day!

The disciples were talking excitedly.  They could not get over it!  Jesus had fed five thousand people from five small loaves of bread and two little fishes!  But, it had been a very long day and now the crowds were leaving, so Jesus said to the disciples, "Row over to the other side of the lake."  When everyone had left it was dark, but Jesus went up a mountainside by Himself to pray.

Jesus had had a long tiring day performing miracles and teaching the people, but He wanted to pray.  He needed to be close to His Heavenly Father so that He would have the strength to go on and do the work God wanted Him to do.  When Jesus finished praying it was very early in the morning and still very dark.

Why not Walk?

He walked down to the shore where His disciples had left in their boat.  Jesus saw that their boat was already far from the land, but they were struggling to row because the wind was against them and waves were splashing into the boat.  However, Jesus knew He had to get to the other side of the lake and join His disciples.

I'm sure He could have called some angels to fly Him across the lake, don't you think so? (Let the children respond).  But, He didn't, because Jesus knew He had to teach His disciples something very important.  And do you know what He did?  (Let the children respond).  He started to walk on the water towards their boat!

Can people walk on water? (Let the children respond)  No, it's impossible and you would sink and drown, because the water in the lake was very deep.  But Jesus began walking on the water, and He didn't drown!  He just walked and walked, and finally came close to where the disciples were on the boat.

It's a Ghost!

All of a sudden one the disciples exclaimed, "What's that?"  He pointed and all the disciples turned to see what it was.  "I think its a ghost!" said one very scared disciple and his knees began to shake.   As the figure came closer all the disciples became terrified.  Jesus immediately said to them, "Don't be afraid, it is I."

They looked at one another and thought how foolish they had been to think that Jesus was a ghost!  Peter boldly replied, "Lord, if it's You, then tell me to come to You on the water."  Jesus must have smiled as He answered, "Come!"

Peter carefully climbed over the side of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.  But when he saw the wind and waves, he became afraid and began to sink.  He cried out, "Lord, save me!"  Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught Peter.  Oh, you of little faith," said Jesus, "Why did you doubt?"

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus!

Peter knew that Jesus could do anything, and that He should have kept his eyes on Jesus and trust Him, but he didn't and so he began to sink.  When Jesus helped Peter into the boat, immediately the wind died down and the waves became calm again.  The disciples then worshipped Jesus and said, "Truly You are the Son of God!"

When they had crossed over the lake to the other side, people from that area recognised Jesus and told their friends, and soon people came from all around to see Jesus.  They brought all the sick people to Him and begged Him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched Him were healed!

Trust Jesus!

Can we trust Jesus today? (Let the children respond).  Yes, we can!  The disciples had learnt a big lesson that day, that they could always trust Jesus to help and protect them wherever they went.

We can do the same and trust Jesus.  We can pray to Jesus every day and ask Him to protect us and help us in all we do.  Let's start right now.

I want some of you to ask Jesus to help you to trust Him.  So that He can help and protect you every day of your life.

God bless!
