The Birth of Jesus

God has a guardian angel to look after each boy and girl that loves Him.

Bible Text:

Luke chapter 2.

Age Group:

Preschool to Grade 2.

Let's take Baby Jesus home!

Pay Your Taxes!

Many years ago, the Roman Emperor, Caesar Augustus ordered that all the people were to go back to the city where they had been born and be taxed there.  And so Joseph and Mary travelled from Nazareth to the city of Bethlehem.

But where were they to stay?  Mary's baby was due to be born at any moment, and the town was full of people who were paying their taxes!  Joseph banged on all the doors in Bethlehem looking for somewhere to stay.  "No room here, we're full!" was the reply he got from every inn.

Born in a Stable:

Except for one inn which had a stable.  The kind inn keeper said they could stay there when he saw that Mary was exhausted and that her child was about to be born.  A short while later, Mary's firstborn Son, Jesus was born.  Mary wrapped Him tightly in cloths and laid Him in a manger.

No, Mary did not go to a hospital, because there were no hospitals in those days!  Did your mommy go to a hospital and you were born there?  (Let the children respond).  Can you imagine some very interested cows, and sheep, and donkeys peeping over Mary's shoulder to see this strange animal-man they called Jesus?  (Let the children respond).

The Shepherds:

In the meantime, some shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks at night on a nearby hill.  They became afraid when the angel of the Lord appeared to them, and God's glory shone like a giant light all around about them.  That must have been very scary, don't you think?  (Let the children respond).  The angel spoke to them and said:

"Fear not, for I bring you good news of great joy ... for there has been born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this will be a sign to you: you will find the Baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Angels Praise God!

And suddenly there was a great crowd of angels praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, and good will toward men."  After the angels went back to Heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing which the Lord has told us about."

They rushed off to Bethlehem shouting as loudly as they could, "Where's the baby Jesus?  We want to see Him!"  I'm sure that they made so much noise that all the town's people came running out to see what all the fuss was about.  Let's shout like the shepherd's did, "Where's the baby Jesus?"  (Let the children respond).

The shepherds couldn't wait to see this Heavenly Baby.  At last they found Mary and Joseph, and there was Baby Jesus lying in a manger!  And when they had seen Him, they joyfully told everyone about the angels and this special Child they had seen!

Guardian Angels:

God kept Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus safe, even though the baby was born in a stable filled with animals.  God sent guardian angels to watch over His Son.  And God wants to keep you safe too.

God has a guardian angel that looks after every boy and girl who loves Him.  He loves you very dearly and wants you to grow up loving and serving Him with all your heart.

God bless!
