Passing the Baton
God wants us to accept His baton of serving Him, and then passing it on to
those we witness to and lead to the Lord.
An athletic relay runner's baton.
Passing on the Ministry:
Before God took Elijah to Heaven in a chariot of fire, Elijah trained and
prepared his follower, Elisha to continue the Lord's work (2 Kings
2:9-15). In verse 9, Elijah asked Elisha, "What can I do for you
before I am taken from you?" Elisha replied, "Let me inherit a
double portion of your spirit".
Elijah said, "You have asked a difficult thing, but if you see me when I am
taken from you, it will be yours." As they were walking along and
talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared
and Elijah was caught up to Heaven in a whirlwind!
Elisha saw him no more, but he picked up Elijah's cloak that had fallen on
him and went back to stand on the bank of the Jordan river. He struck
the water and cried, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" and as he did
this, the water parted and he was able to cross over to the other side.
The group of prophets from Jericho who were watching, exclaimed in amazement,
"The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha!" And, Elisha went on to
continue Elijah's ministry and did twice as many miracles as Elijah had
done. Elijah had passed his baton of serving God to Elisha.
I am sure that all of you have watched athletics and seen how relay runners
hands a baton to the next runner. Then that runner races down the
next part of the race and hands it over again. Our Christian lives
are like a relay race. We run our part of the race by serving God
and spreading the Gospel. The writer of Hebrews 12:1-2 said:
"Let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Jesus the author and finisher (or perfecter) of our faith."
And we need to pass the baton of our faith to our friends and to the next
generation of children who follow us.
Accepting the Baton:
God has saved you and has a special plan for your life. The plan of
Salvation is that someone prayed for you, and told you that Jesus loves
you and wanted to save you so that you can have eternal life.
Jesus came into your heart and changed you into a new creation.
Now that you are a child of God, your desires have changed and you want
to serve God with all your heart.
Someone obeyed Jesus' Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) to go and preach
the Gospel to you. The cross came into your life and you were saved.
The word, "Go" and the cross, a "t", form the word, "Got" and that's
what Jesus did. He "Got" you when He changed your life, and now you
belong to God!
Passing the Baton:
But Jesus also wants you to obey His commission and "Go". To do this
you need to accept the baton that Jesus holds out to you. His plan
for your life includes telling your friends about Jesus. He also
wants you to pray for them, so that God's Holy Spirit can draw them until
they surrender their lives to Jesus.
And then you will have passed the baton onto someone else, and Heaven and
the angels will rejoice as a new name is written down in Glory!
