What is a Leader?
A Christian leader is a person who has been called by God to lead people to Jesus and to teach them to be disciples. The word "Lead" means "to guide or go ahead of." Jesus demonstrated this by His example in leading and teaching His disciples, and by His parable of sheep being led by a shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we can only be leaders if we walk closely with Him and help others to do the same.
Living in God's Presence:
We have to be true men and women of God, who dwell in His presence, listen to His voice and allow His word to guide and direct our lives. As we look into His beauty we allow His love to permeate our beings and taste God's infinite goodness, mercy and truth. Our desire should be to know Jesus intimately and personally and to desire His presence. We must listen to hear His voice and experience His love and His goodness. Only then can the Holy Spirit begin to add the knowledge and skills we need to lead and care for others.
Paul tells us in Colossians 2:6-8 that we must live our whole life in Jesus, being rooted and built up in Him, and held firm by our faith. We need to be filled with thankfulness and see that no one deprives us of our freedom by some empty and deceptive philosophy based on the principles of the world. We therefore need to test our decisions and ideas against the Bible and base them on what the Bible says. Remember, Jesus said that apart from Himself, we can do nothing (John 15:5b).
Equiped by the Holy Spirit:
Our conclusion is that it is only by the Holy Spirit's anointing and power that we can assume the responsibilities of leadership. If we acknowledge that Jesus is preparing us, even though we may fail sometimes, He will equip us and enable us to complete the task He has given us.
