Growing as a Teacher |
God's Attributes
An attribute is a quality that makes a person who he or she is. It is
important because we cannot see God, but He has told us about Himself in the
Bible. God wants us to know Who He is, and what He is really like.
God wants Christians to have good attributes as well. The quality of our character will develop as we learn to know and serve God. We will become more and more like Jesus as we read the Bible and seek to please Him in all we do. Some of God's attributes are:
1. Holy:
Because God is holy, no human can approach Him because we are all sinners.
But, God wants us to grow to be like Him by gaining an understanding
of what His holiness is all about. Jeremiah 9:24 gives us a glimpse
of what God is like:
"But let him that glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me,
that I am the Lord, 2. Trinity:
We cannot understand how our God can be a triune God, that is, God the Father,
God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We know that He is one God, but
three Persons in one, and that all are in perfect agreement with each other.
In Matthew 3:16-17, we see this in the baptism of Jesus:
"And Jesus when He was baptised, went up out of the water. And the
heavens were opened 3. Eternal:
God has no beginning or ending. He has always been and He will always
be. We cannot grasp this since we were created, and so we think that
God must also have been created and have had a beginning. But this is
not so, and we can only accept by faith, and as Deuteronomy 33:27 shows, that
God is God and that He is Eternal.
"The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." 4. Infinite:
God is a Spirit and He is not limited by time, place or space, and 1 Kings 8:27
shows us that He is enormous and almighty:
"But will God really dwell on earth? 5. All-Knowing (Omniscient):
God knows everything from the past, the present and the future. He knows
all about each of us. He knows what we are thinking. David
acknowledeged in Psalm 139:1-4, that God knows our deepest needs and desires,
and that He knows how to meet them:
"O Lord, You have searched me, and known me. 6. All-Wise:
God created and understands all things. He has perfect plans for the world
and for each of us, and always carries them out in the best possible way.
And as Isaiah 40:28 shows us, we can trust God completely:
Have you not known? Have you not heard? 7. All-Powerful (Omnipotent):
God can do anything He wants to do. His power is greater than anything we
could ever imagine, but He always uses it for our good. Jeremiah 32:40
says:
"And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, 8. All-Present (Omnipresent):
God is always present everywhere in the world at the same time. He is with
us all the time, day and night. He sees everything we do and hears
everything we say. Proverbs 5:21 tells us that nothing is hid from God:
"For the ways of man are in full view of the Lord, 9. Unchanging (Immutable):
Because God is perfect, He never changes in any way. He is always the same
and loves each one of us in the same everlasting way. God wants only the
best for us and James 1:17a assures us that God has good gifts in store for
us:
"Every good and every perfect gift is from above, 10. Majestic:
God is full of goodness, beauty, power and excellence and He is awesomely
wonderful. He is our great God and like David in Psalm 104:1b, we can
only bow our heads and worship and praise Him:
"O Lord my God, you are very great. 11. Sovereign:
God always does what He says He will and what He has promised. We can
trust Him and His Word completely. We need to love and serve God with
all of our hearts. As our Great King, Isaiah 44:6 shows that we owe Him
all our loyalty and allegiance:
"This is what the Lord the King of Israel and His Redeemer, the Lord Almighty
says, Your Own Attributes (Qualities):
As we have looked at God's attributes, we see He is a Great, Big, Wonderful God!
I have given Him my heart and life and I love Him with all my heart.
I hope you have given Him your heart and that you love Him too!
Take time to get to know God. Ask Him to help you get to know Him personally, and then watch Him build His wonderful character in your life!
God bless.
