Dirty Washing on the Line

Setting up the washing line

We all have sinned and our sins look like a row of dirty washing on a line.   Only the blood of Jesus can clean away all the sin in our lives.   Just watch the dirty washing fall off as Jesus changes us into God's children!

Materials You Need:

Two pieces of soft rope about 1,5 metres long.
A short length of dowel about 300mm long by 20mm diameter.
Several pieces of different coloured cloth about 80mm by 350mm.
A red scarf or a piece of red material about 60cm square.

Two ropes are tied to a stick.  Pieces of coloured material are then tied onto the extended ropes as "sins".  To make doubly sure that the cloths are securely tied on, two ends of the rope are tied around the cloths.   The cloths are then covered by the red scarf and the stick is removed.   To the surprise of the audience, the cloths fall off (still knotted) when the ends of the ropes are pulled, since only the blood of Jesus can cleanse away all the sin in our lives.

Performing the Effect:

  1. Take the two ropes and drape them over the stick and then tie the doubled ropes in a single knot to represents the devil coming into our lives.
  2. Have two people pull out the ends of the doubled ropes to make a "washing-line".
  3. Tie pieces of coloured cloth onto both sides of the ropes (with single knots) to represent the sins that we do.
  4. Then take one of the ropes from both sides and tie a single knot around the cloths and pull the pieces of cloth into a bundle.
  5. This shows that Satan makes sure we are doubly bound in our sins.
  6. Return an end of rope to each person holding the other end of the rope and cover the bundle with the red scarf that represents the Blood of Jesus.
  7. Hold the knot tightly and withdraw the stick as the devil cannot stand the blood of Jesus, and must get out of our lives.
  8. Then let go of the knot and have the two people pull strongly on the ends of the rope, whereupon the pieces of cloth will fall to the floor still knotted, and the ropes will be found to be whole and unknotted.

Romans 6:23.

Sin is disobeying God, and each one of us has done things that do not please God. We cannot measure up to God's standard, no matter how hard we try.  Even the tiniest lie is a sin and Romans 3:23 says:

"There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

The devil is like this stick.  He just wants us to keep on sinning.   He comes into our lives and makes sure we fall into temptation to sin.   These two ropes represent you and me.  (Show the two ropes).  When we were born, we were innocent and there was no sin in our lives, but as we got older, we soon learnt to lie and do other wrong things.

Bound by Our Sins:

I am going to make these ropes into a washing line.  I will tie them to the stick that represents the devil.  (Take the two ropes and tie them onto the stick).  The devil is always near us tempting us to do wrong and our sins are like a row of dirty washing on a line.  Let's use these coloured cloths to represent our sins.  What sins have you done?  (Wait for responses and then tie a cloth onto the ropes to represent each sin).

And then Satan makes sure we are doubly bound in our sins.  So I am going to bind all the cloths together with this knot.  (Tie a single knot around all the clothes, and then draw them together in a bundle and hand the ends of the ropes back to your helpers).  The sins are doubly secure and we can never get free of them ourselves.

Sins Make Us Slaves:

Romans 6:16 says:

"Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him,
you are slaves to the one whom you obey."

If we sin then we become the slave of the devil and that's what this verse means.  I don't want to be a slave of the devil.  Do you?   (Allow the children to respond).  The Bible tells us that we all have sinned, and Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death.   This means that the penalty for our sins is eternal separation from God.

Set Free:

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, and ask Him to come and live in our hearts, He applies His blood to our lives.  (Cover the bundle of cloths with the red scarf).  The devil cannot stand the blood of Jesus and must get out of our lives.  (Grip the knot tightly and remove the stick).  There, he has gone and I am no longer his slave!

Next the sins will have to go as Jesus makes us clean inside.  (Tell the two persons to pull strongly on the ends of the rope).  See, the pieces of cloth representing our sins have fallen off onto the floor.  And look, they are still knotted!  Notice that every one of them has fallen off.  Not one is left!  Jesus will do a good job and forgive you for every single sin that you have ever done, and then He will cleanse you with His blood and make you spotless inside.

Clean and Whole Again:

The ropes are now whole.  (Show the two ropes).  This is just like Jesus makes our lives clean and whole again.  Now we can claim the second part of Romans 6:23 which says:

"But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

We can then ask Jesus to come into our hearts, make us into one of God's children and give us eternal life.  One day you will stand in front of God and tell Him how you love Jesus.  God will reply, "Yes, I see that the blood of Jesus has made you clean, and Jesus has written your name in His Lamb's Book of Life.  You can enter Heaven and live with Us forever!"

What about you?  Have you still got sin in your life?  Why not pray and ask Jesus to come into your life and make you into one of God's children?

God bless!
