Controlling Your Tongue

My tongue is sick!

Bible Text:

Proverbs 10:19.

Materials Needed:

Two identical tongues cut out from coloured cardboard.
Coarse sand or fine gravel.
White glue.
Spread glue thickly on one tongue, cover with sand or gravel and leave it to dry.

Age Group:

Grades 1 - 7 (7 to 13 years).

Lesson:

How many of you know this rhyme - "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me."  How untrue that is.  You may not SEE the hurt, but lies deep someone's heart and can never be forgotten!  Psalm 34:13 says:

"Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies."

We often say unkind things to each other when we are angry and don't care how the other person will feel.  But, once the words have been said, they cannot be taken back, and the damage is done.

Nasty Words:

I need you all to help me and listen for any nasty words that come out of my mouth (Carry on talking, but include nasty words or insults you have heard the children use, so that the children can point out the hurtful words to you).

(Alternately, pre-arrange with the other teachers to act out a fight with you).

You see children, when you say things in anger, they leave a scar.   It doesn't matter how many times you say, "I'm sorry," as the wound is still there.  It lies deep someone's heart and what you said can never be forgotten!

Nasty Tongue!

I want to show you my tongue after all those nasty things I said (Display the sand/gravel tongue).  I'm not very proud of my tongue as it's very rough (Hold the tongue against their cheeks so that they can feel how rough it is).

I'm going to ask Jesus to guard my tongue and help me say only kind and nice things.  Thank you Jesus, and now I have a smooth new tongue! (Display the second tongue).  I hope your tongue is like this one and not like that ugly rough one!

Controlling Your Tongue:

Proverbs 10:19, has some very wise words for us to take to heart.

"When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise."

The next time you want to say something nasty, say a little prayer in your heart.  Ask Jesus to guard your tongue, and help you to only say kind and nice things to other people!

God bless.
