Painful Chains

Will I still smile when bound with chains?

Bible Text:

Psalm 116:3, "Death attacked from all sides, and I was captured by its painful chains.

Materials Needed:

A 2m length of thin chain.
Two small padlocks and keys.

Age Group:

Grades 4 - 8 (10 to 14 years).

Lesson:

We know that the wages of sin is death or spiritual separation from God forever.  Our text speaks about this death, and how the sins that cause it are like painful chains.   What it means, is that sin binds us until we cannot get free.

I need a volunteer.  Thank you - you are very brave!   I'm going to wrap this chain around you and padlock it to your hands.  There!  Let's see if you can get free.  Was it nice to be chained up?  How did it feel?  ( Unlock the chains if the child cannot free himself ).

Well, when sin chains you it's not only painful, but you can't get free, because it's the devil that binds you!  There is a song that says, "My chains fell off, my soul was free.  I rose, went forth, and followed Thee".  In Psalm 118:16, the Bible says:

"With His mighty arm the Lord wins victories!"

Yes, Jesus is powerful and only He can break the chains.   I think we need to ask Jesus to make sure we are not bound by any sin.  And if we are, for Him to set us free.   Let's pray right now.

God bless!
