Bible Text:
Psalm 118:6.
Materials Needed:
A large sword (optional).
A sling or a handkerchief.
5 smooth white stones.
Age Group:
Grades 2 - 7 (7 to 13 years).
David Learns to Know God:
David loved God and spoke every day to Him in prayer and sang praises to God
while he watched his father's sheep. David had learnt that God would
help him when wild animals attacked his sheep. In Psalm 118:6, David
said:
"The Lord is with me - I will not be afraid."
David Trusts God:
When David went to see his brothers and heard Goliath shouting, he knew that
he could count on God to make him brave. He was brave when he shared
with his brothers, who then mocked him and said he was a child who only
looked after a few sheep. He was also brave when he went to speak to
the king and tell him that he would fight the Philistine giant
(1 Samuel 17).
Goliath was God's enemy and thought he could defy the armies of God.
But David knew better, as he knew that God was on his side! In Psalm
119:11, David said:
"I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You."
We need to accept Jesus as our Saviour and have our sins forgiven.
And then we can also know that God is on our side!
Five Stones:
Goliath had a great big sword (
Display the sword if you have one),
but David was not afraid of this. He used it to cut off the giant's
head! If we read our Bibles and learn memory verses, it is like
a sword with which we can fight off the devil.
David had a sling and five smooth stones, but with God, he only needed one!
I have five stones and a sling (Display the stones and put one
in the sling or hankie and demonstrate how David used it). These
stones (Hold up the stones one by one) remind us of what all
Christian children need in their lives:
- Love - children can love God and want to please Him in all they
do.
- Prayer - children can pray and God will make them strong and
help them do good things.
- Brave - children can count on God to make them brave when they
are teased or threatened for being a Christian.
- Trust - children can have faith in our big God and trust Him to
help them when they have needs or face something that is like a giant
Goliath.
- Kind - children can be willing to share what they have, and be
kind to their brothers and sisters and to children at school.
Having Courage:
Ask God to make you brave today and ask Him to help you love, pray, trust
Him and be kind to others. God is always ready to give you
courage just as He gave David courage! Why don't you ask God right
now? Let's pray.
God bless!
