The Effect:

Age Group:

Grades 1 - 7 (7 to 14 years).

We need to choose good things as our treasures.

Choice, treasure, Heaven.

Treasures that Last:

I have in my hand a R200 Banknote.  I'm sure you would rush to grab it if you could!  We know money will buy many nice things.  However, lots of people will do anything to get money and be rich.  Jesus warned us to be careful not to love earthly riches, treasures and valuable possessions too much.  Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus told us to:

"Do not store up treasures on earth, where moth and rust can destroy them,
And where thieves can break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Bad Treasures?

Some boys and girls are choosing treasures like getting high sniffing glue, or using drugs, or getting drunk.  Others are experimenting with sex and witchcraft.  Many are hooked on television, videos, pornography, raves and clubs.  Many have friends who lead them astray into doing bad things like lying, cheating, swearing, gambling and stealing.

The Devil wants to rob you and he will tell you that these things are good for you.  They become treasures and may indeed give pleasure for a while, but then get you into trouble with your parents, school or the police.   They can lead to sickness or even death.  They don't store up anything for you in Heaven.

What are Your Treasures?

All the treasures that we have spoken about only last for your lifetime, and then they are gone.  You can't take riches to Heaven, only yourself.  Jesus wants us to find treasures in the Bible like all the wonderful promises that God has made and claim them for our lives.  They will last forever and are the type of treasures that Jesus was talking about.

What are your treasures and what are the most important things in your life?  Think for a moment about where you spend most of your time.  Our treasures are often the things that interest us the most.  And then answer this question in your heart:

Am I making my treasures more important than loving and serving Jesus?

Choosing the Right Things:

The disciples chose to leave everything so they could follow Jesus as they knew He was the way to Heaven.  In John 6:68-69, Peter said:

"Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.
We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

What are you going to choose?  You need to choose the right things.  When we trust in God we will be able to serve Him with all our hearts and do everything to please Him.  We will then have a crown of righteousness waiting for us in Heaven.

What a pity if we should lose this.  And if we choose not to accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we will miss eternal life all together!

Banking Treasures in Heaven:

I have another banknote here. (Show the children the homemade Banknote).  It's very special so let's read what's written on it.  It says, "Bank of Heaven".  Jesus said that we should store all that is precious in our lives in Heaven.  He will keep it very safe.

On this side it says, "ETERNAL LIFE" because Jesus paid for all our sins on the cross at Calvary, so that we can go to Heaven and live for ever.   That's a very precious treasure that I want to store up!  I hope you have asked Jesus into your life as Saviour and are choosing to serve Him with all your hearts.

And then it says a "CROWN OF LIFE" is waiting for all who love the Lord.  Make sure your bank is in Heaven and that you store all your treasures there!

God bless.
