True Salt

Bible Text:

Matthew 5:13

Materials You Need:

Two salt cellars, one filled with salt.
The other with crushed sugar (to look like salt).
Two teaspoons.
Two glasses with a little water in them.
A hard-boiled egg.

Sweet or Salt?

"Salt" is poured into two glasses and a child is asked to taste them.  The salt tastes salty while sugar will taste sweet.

Age Group:

Grades 1 - 5 (7 to 11 years).

As Christians we need not only to love Jesus, but also to love each other by caring and showing respect for one another.  In that way we will be salt that is full of flavour!

I have a problem!  Someone has mixed up my salt cellars.   They both look like salt but how can we find out what is inside?   Perhaps I can put some in these two glasses and mix it with a spoon.  ( Pour some "salt" from each cellar into separate glasses and stir ).

Now I need a person who will come and taste the glasses and tell me what is in the cellars.  You will?  Thank you.  ( Have the child taste each glass and tell you what is in it ).  You were very brave.  Perhaps there was poison in them!  Anyway, what is in the two cellars before I mix them up again?  Sugar and salt?  That's funny, I expected to find salt in a salt cellar but not sugar.  I might have sprinkled sugar on my sloppy chips and they would have tasted gross!

Is this the sugar cellar?  I am going to have to throw it out into a glass ( Pour the sugar into a glass and set it aside ).   That's better.  Now there is no confusion and the next time I have chips, they will taste super!  Real salt has to taste like salt and not like sugar!

Tasteless Food:

Job complained that tasteless food needs salt, and that the white of an egg has no flavour.  I agree with Job, my food needs to have salt in it when it is cooked ( Put some salt on the hard-boiled egg and eat it ).  "Mmmm, that was very tasty, what a pity that I only had one egg!"  Jesus spoke about salt in Matthew 5:13 and said:

"You are the salt of the earth.
But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men."

Why are we the salt of the earth? ( Let the children respond ).  What can we do to be the salt of the earth?

Salt full of Flavour:

Jesus said that He had a new command for us.  We are to love one another, even as He loved us.  In this way everybody will know that we are His disciples (followers).  As Christians we need to be different from people in the world.  We need love Jesus and also love each other.

This means that we need to care and show respect for our frinds and to other people.  We also need to speak and treat one another with respect, kindness and patience.  Let's pray now and ask Jesus to change us and fill us with His love for one another.  Then we will be like salt that is full of flavour.

God bless!
