What's in a Name?

Bible Text:

Exodus chapters 3 and 4.

Materials You Need:

Book of Names - to look up the meaning of kids names.

Age Group:

Grades 4 - 8 (10 to 14 years).

Theme:

God lives up to His Name and keeps His promises.

Am I in that Book?

Lesson:

I have here a book of people's names and their meanings ( Show the Book of Names to the children ).  In Bible times names had great meaning and told you about the nature of the person named.

The angel told Mary to give her baby the name, "Jesus", which means "Saviour" (Luke 1:31).  Jesus lived up to His name and saved many people from evil spirits, some from sickness and some from a meaningless life.   Jesus delivered a wild man near Gadarenes, healed the man at the pool of Bethesda, and saved Zaccheaus who only lived for money and possessions.

Jesus took the work God had given Him seriously.  He died to free us from the power of Satan, and He has saved us and prepared a place for us to live with Him for eternity in Heaven.  He truly lives up to His Name!

God's Name:

God's name in the Bible is "Lord", but in Hebrew His name is "I AM" which means, "The God Who is always present".  God was with Abraham and Moses all through their lives.  He was also present in every new generation that followed, right up to today.  And now He is with us and will be with us all our lives!

When Moses hesitated to respond to the Lord, God gave him a series of promises in Exodus chapters 3 and 4, and said:

  1.  I will be with you (v12).
  2.  The elders of Israel will listen to you (v18).
  3.  I will stretch out My hand .... and perform wonders (v20).
  4.  I will help you speak and teach you what to say (4:12).

How could Moses know that God would keep His promises?  He trusted God because of His name!  God is the great "I AM".  And because He is always present with His people, God is able to keep and fulfil every promise He has made in the Bible!

Your Name:

Let's look up some of your names and find out the meanings ( Look up a number of the children's names and find their meanings ).  Do you like the meaning of your name?  And do you live up to the meaning of your name?  Does your name suit you?

When God told Moses, "This is My Name forever", He was speaking to us today as well.  He is with us now, and He will be with us tomorrow, and God will be with us for ever!  He has promised that He will never leave us, nor forsake us.  And because God "IS", every promise He made to us in Christ will be fulfilled in us!

God bless.
