Effect:
Buttons ("sins") are placed in the glass and covered with Cola.
They are hidden from our view, but like our sins they
soon pop up to to the surface and we are found out. The
experiment is set up again, but this time covering the buttons
with Soda Water. The "sins" are now visible as they rise
to the surface and are removed with a teaspoon.
Age Group:
Grades 1 - 5 (7 to 11 years).
Theme:
We cannot hide our sins from God. Jesus is not only willing
to forgive our sins, but He cleanses our heart from them as well.
Here's a Great Experiment to share with Friends
Have you done something wrong and then hoped that nobody would find
out what you did? Well, I've got bad news for you because
when we do wrong things, we will eventually be found out, even if
we try and keep them a secret. The problem with trying to
live a good clean life by ourselves, is that evil thoughts and
deeds keep popping up out of our hearts.
When the prophet Samuel had to choose a new king for Israel.
He saw Jesse's sons and was impressed with their large size and
good looks. To his surprise God rejected them and told him
to anoint the boy David as king. God then said to Samuel:
"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.
Man looks at the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).
I want to show you what happens when we try to hide our sins from
other people and God.
Hidden Sins:
Let's make this glass represent our lives, and this cola a place deep
inside our hearts (
Nearly fill the glass with freshly opened
cola ). These buttons are for the sins and wrong things we
have done. What do you think this first button is for?
And this one? (
Let the children respond as you hold up a
number of buttons one at a time ).
I'm going to drop all these sins into this glass of cola ( Drop
all buttons into the glass ). Can you see them? No,
it looks like our sins are hidden deep in our hearts ( The
buttons rise to the surface after a few seconds ). Wow!
What did I tell you? You cannot hide your sins and now
they are popping up. Look, here they are!
God Sees all Sin:
Instead of trying to hide our sins, we need to remember that God
always sees them. We will repeat the experiment, but this time
using clear soda water (
Repeat the setup using Soda Water
instead of the Cola ). Now you can see all those sins deep in
our hearts. It's just like God looking into our hearts and seeing
all the sins hidden there!
This spoon represents Jesus, who died on the cross to take the
punishment for our sins. When we sin and do wrong things, we
need to ask Jesus to forgive us and make us clean inside. I am
going to remove the buttons with this teaspoon ( Remove the buttons
). Now our heart is clean. The Bible says in 1 John
1:9 that:
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just,
and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
If we are really sincere, Jesus will forgive us and cleanse the sins out
of our hearts. He will also give us a desire to please Him by not
doing them again. Let's bow our heads and pray. Think about
your life and see if there are any sins in your heart. If there
are, then pray right now and ask Jesus to forgive you and wash them
away with His precious blood.
God bless!
