The Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids

Application:

Children need to be ready for Jesus's soon return.

Text:

Matthew 25:1-13.

It's Wise to Prepare:

Jesus told a parable about ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.  In those days the lamps were pottery bowls with a wick that dipped into olive oil.  Now, five of them were wise, and took flasks of extra oil with them.  But, the other five were foolish, because they didn't bring any extra oil with them.

As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and laid down and slept.  But at midnight there was a shout, "Here is the bridegroom, come out to meet him!"  All the bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps.

The foolish bridesmaids said to the wise ones, "Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out."  But the wise bridesmaids replied, "No, we don't have enough to share, so you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves!"

It's too Late!

While they were away buying oil, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went into the wedding hall with him, and the door was shut.  Later the five foolish bridesmaids arrived and knocked of the door.  "Lord," they begged, "Please open up for us."  But He replied, "I don't know you".  And so the five foolish bridesmaids never went to the wedding!

Jesus warned His listeners, "Keep awake therefore, for you don't know the day nor the hour that the Son of man comes!"  In Mark 13:26-27, Jesus said:

"At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds
with great power and glory.
And He will send His angels and gather His elect ...
from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens."

Ready and Waiting:

All the bridesmaids knew the bridegroom was coming, but five were not ready and waiting.  Jesus was teaching that all of us need to be prepared and waiting for His soon return to earth.  We must be like the wise bridesmaids, for they knew they had to be prepared and ready to participate in the wedding.  And that their lamps would be shining when the bridegroom came.

How can we be ready for Jesus' return?  (Let the children respond).  Firstly, Jesus must live in our hearts as our Saviour, and that we are sure we belong to God and are His children.  Secondly, we need to be serving God every day by praying, reading the Bible and obeying God's Word.  Thirdly, we need to be letting our lights shine by the way we talk and behave, by caring and being kind to other children, and by telling them about Jesus.

We don't know when Jesus will return, but we do know it will be soon.   So make sure that you are ready!

God bless.
