The Prodigal Son

A joyful father!

Application:

God loves children and wants to forgive their sins and save them.

Text:

Luke 15:11-32.

I'm Rich and Free!

Jesus told a parable about a man who had two sons.  The younger son asked, "Father, give me my share of my inheritance."  So his father divided his all his goods, money and property between his sons.

Would you like your father to give you a share of all his money, cars, property and possessions so that you could go far away and have a grand time?  (Let the children respond).  Well, lets see what the younger son did and how it went for him.

Not long after that, the younger son collected together all his possessions and lots of money, and journeyed to a distant country.  He was free and now he could have a good time all the time!  And what did he do?  He wasted all his wealth in wild partying!

I'm Broke and Starving!

After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need.  He lost all his so-called friends who had only been interested in his riches.  And now he was starving and had no food or money left!

What did the younger son do?  He went and hired himself to a farmer of that country and the farmer sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.  But, he became so hungry that he longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating.  But, no one gave him anything to eat!

Perhaps those of you who wanted your Dad to give you lots of money so that you could go far away and have a grand time, should think again!  Maybe it's better to stay at home where you are loved and cared for!

Returning Home:

When the young son came to his senses, he said, "How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!  I will return and go back to my father and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I am no longer worthy to be called your son.  Make me to be like one of your hired men."   And so he travelled back to his home.

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him.  He ran and threw his arms around his son and kissed him.  The son turned to his father and said, "I have sinned against heaven and against you, and am no longer worthy to be called your son!"

He's Home!

But the father was so happy.  His son had returned and was safely back home again!  So he called his servants, "Bring the best robe and put it on him.  Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.   And bring the fattened calf here and kill it, and let us have a feast and celebrate.  For this son of mine was dead and is alive again, and was lost and now is found!"  So they began to celebrate.

Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields and when he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.  So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.  "Your brother has come home," he replied, "And your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound."

I'm Angry!

The older brother became very angry and refused to go into the feast.  So his father came out and pleaded with him.  But he answered his father and said, "Look!  All these many years I have been serving you and have never disobeyed your orders.  You never gave me even a young goat so that I could celebrate with my friends!  But when this son of yours who has wasted your property comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!"

"My son," the father said, "You have always been with me, and everything I have is yours.  But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found!"

God Loves You!

Perhaps you have gone your own way like the prodigal son and have done wrong things.  Your heart may be empty, and you may long to return to God, and know the forgiveness that He offers you.  Jesus wants to fold you in His arms and fill you with His warmth and love.

God loves you with an everlasting love and He sent Jesus to die for your sins and become your Saviour, Best Friend and Lord.  Like the father in the story, God holds out His hands in welcome.  He wants the lost to return to Him and be saved.

Will you surrender now and come to Him and say, "God, I need Jesus in my life so that I can be one of Your children and go to Heaven when I die."   He's waiting for you, so do it now!

God bless.
